William Michael “Mike” McCormick, 80, of Lyons, Kansas, formerly of Denver, Colorado, and Lewellen, Nebraska, passed away February 1, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born September 9, 1943, in Lewellen, Nebraska, the son of Alfred Orr and Harriet E. (Spindler) McCormick. He graduated from Lewellen High School, with the class of 1961, and later received his bachelor’s degree in both psychology and business from Regis University in Denver in 1966. He has resided in Lyons since 1971, to pursue farming and to raise livestock, while also was employed as the office manager of Lyons Manufacturing. He then worked at the Lyons State Bank for 37 years, as chief lending officer and board chairman, graduating from the University of Colorado Graduate School of Banking during his time there, and retiring in August 2019. Following his retirement, he ventured into land appraisal work which he was still actively involved in. Mike enjoyed supporting his community in various volunteering roles, serving as a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, as a trustee. Additionally, he served on the Hospital District #1 of Rice County Board, Rice County District #2 Hospital Board, Mitchell Township Board, Habitat for Humanity Board, and was treasurer and finance chair for the First United Methodist Church, Little River. Some of Mike’s various interests were hunting, fishing, traveling, photography and listening to live music. He most cherished visiting for hours with his family and friends. On April 5, 1997, Mike was united in marriage with Joan Lois Hargitt. He is survived by his wife, Joan of Lyons, KS; two daughters, Shannan Sutton and husband Ralph of Lago Vista, Texas, and Tara Galyardt and husband Tony of Wichita, and three stepsons, Robin Fisher, Mark Fisher, and Tracy Fisher and wife Raquel of Valier, MT; and sister, Merri Anne McLaughlin and husband Jerry of Oshkosh, NE; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three step-great-grandchildren. Mike is preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Seana Christine. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, with Pastor Rob Bolton officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M., Monday, February 5, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, and from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., at the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, with family present. Memorials may be given to the Rice Community Healthcare Foundation, Tiger’s Den, Lewellen, NE, or The Nature Conservancy in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
