William Lee Thompson Obituary

William Lee “Bill” Thompson, 85, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away September 16, 2025, at Sterling Village, Sterling, Kansas. He was born April 18, 1940, in San Mateo, California, the son of Robert and Maryann (Hammond) Thompson. Bill has resided in Lyons since 1976, formerly of Key West, Florida. He served in the United States Army retiring in 1993. Bill was a sergeant for the Lyons Police Department, served as Rice County Sheriff, and worked for Homeland Security in Wichita as a fraud investigator. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, camping, and traveling. Bill was able to enjoy an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. On June 13, 1961, Bill was united in marriage with Claudette Salis in Key West, Florida. Bill is survived by his wife, Claudette Thompson of Sterling, KS; son, Lee Thompson of Lyons, KS; two daughters, Julie Hudson of Lyons, KS, and Shirley Waldy of SC; brother, Dan Thompson of CA; two sisters, Nancy Thompson of CA, and Barbara Peck of WA; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve Thompson; and sister, Peggy Thompson. A private family service will be held at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, with military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Sterling Village (for the activity fund) in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
