Wallace Rons Obituary

Wallace “Wally” Rons, 92, of Arma, Kansas, passed away at 8:50 A.M., Saturday, August 13, 2022, at his home. He was born August 17, 1929, in Arma, the son of Lay and Anna Polsak Rons. Wally was a lifelong Arma resident. He graduated from Arma High School with the class of 1947, and later attended the Chicago Technical College. Wally was a self-employed carpenter and plumber. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation and was a custodian for Northeast High School in Arma. Wally served in the United States Army during the Korean War from October 2, 1951 until his honorable discharge on July 7, 1953 attaining the rank of Sergeant. He received the United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Soldier’s+ Medal and Korean Service Medal with Bronze Camp Star. In July of 2006, Wally was finally awarded the Soldier’s Medal. He was leaving a mess tent near Soksal-lyong, Korea in 1953, when a truck crashed into the tent and caught fire. Wally, who worked in tent, ran back to the fire to help save his buddies. For his actions, he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, which recognizes heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arma, where he served as CYO Leader, and member of the American Legion Lon Helm Post #182 of Arma. Wally was also a member of the Arma Christmas Club, where he would replace the burnt-out Christmas lights. On April 28, 1951, Wally was united in marriage with Betty J. Zibert at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Arma. They shared 67 years together. She preceded him in death on March 23, 2019. He is also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leo Rons; and great-grandson, Canaan Colby Rons. Wally is survived by his daughter, Cindy Ashmore and husband Dave of Arma; son, Barry Rons and wife Joy of St. Johns, MI; four grandchildren, Blayne Rons and wife Teresa of Lyons, KS, Dustin Ashmore and wife Trina of Frontenac, KS, Heather Tedlock and husband Kyle of Frontenac, KS, and Chase Rons and wife Allison of Broken Arrow, OK; and three great-grandchildren, Landon Hege, Brayden Rons, and Fischer Tedlock. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 19, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arma, with Father Lee Yoakam officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, Kansas, with military honors by the United States Army- Ft. Riley Honor Guard. The rosary will be prayed at 6:00 P.M., Thursday, August 18, 2022, at Bedene Funeral Home, Arma, where the family will receive friends following until 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arma in care of Bedene Funeral Home, Arma.
