Virginia May (Newell) Hargadine

Virginia May Hargadine, 93, passed away on June 23, 2023, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River, KS. Virginia was born on June 4, 1930, in Stafford, KS to Ivan and Vina Sue Newell. She was the 7th of 10 children born to the parents. She graduated high school from Alden, KS. Virginia married Loren Hargadine on January 12, 1948, in Alden, KS and four children were born to this marriage. Virginia was an active member of Salem United Methodist Church, Bushton, KS while living in Bushton but moved to Chase, KS where she attended the Chase Community Presbyterian Church. She was active with the Chase Senior Citizen’s Group, the VFW Auxiliary in Holyrood, and Order of the Eastern Star Alliance. Along with her husband she owned a clothing business in Chase and was an avid gardener and crafter. She also was a bowler for many years in Ellsworth and Ellinwood, KS. She is survived by her children, Lois Chiles (Phil) of Lansing, KS, Betty Robison of Horton, KS, Arthur Hargadine of Smolan, KS, and Anna Crowley of Paola, KS; her brother, Ivan Newell of Lacy, WA; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews plus many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loren; and 8 siblings, Wallace Newell, Richard Newell, Nancy Thompson, Lillian Drake, Rose Eatinger, Gilbert Newell, David Newell and MaryAnn Wallace; 2 sons-in-law; and nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Sandstone Heights Nursing Home and the Rice County Hospice Group for taking such good care of her. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2023, from 5-7 PM at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with Pastor Joel Grizzle officiating. Burial will follow at the Alden Valley Cemetery, Alden.
