Velma Lucille (Atteberry) Gish

Velma Lucille Gish, 99, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away on December 22, 2020 at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born March 20, 1921 in Pawnee Rock, Kansas, the daughter of Guy Manson and Grace Amanda Birks Atteberry. Velma graduated from Larned High School with the class of 1939. She has resided in Lyons since 1939. Velma was a bookkeeper and bank teller at the former Chandler Bank, now First Bank of Lyons. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Lyons, and the First Christian Church Women’s Fellowship; Eastern Star; and Gray Ladies. On July 14, 1940, Velma was united in marriage with Chester R. “Bud” Gish in Lyons. He preceded her in death on October 16, 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Earl, Gerald, Clifford, Darrell, and Glenn Atteberry; and sisters, Marjorie Buck and Eva Hiett. Velma is survived by her two sons, Charles Alan Gish and wife Mary Kay of Lyons, KS, and James G. Gish and Mary Wolc of Topeka, KS; two brothers, Duane Atteberry and wife Joan of Scottsdale, AZ, and Arlis Atteberry and wife Shirley of Larned, KS; sister-in-law, Daisy Atteberry of Larned, KS; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 26, 2020 at the First Christian Church, Lyons with Pastor Ron DeVore officiating. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. Visitation will be Saturday, December 26, 2020 from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church, Lyons with family present. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church or Eastern Star Queen Esther Chapter #32 in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
