Richard Leon Tommer Sr., 82, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away August 27, 2024, at his home. He was born September 2, 1941, in Frankfort, Kansas, the son of Philip and Laura Marie (Williams) Tommer. Richard has resided in Lyons since 1972, formerly of Kinsley, Kansas. He graduated from Kinsley High School, with the class of 1959. Richard was a truck driver for 56 years. He served in the United States Air Force from December 4, 1961 until December 3, 1967. Richard was a member of the CB Club, Lyons American Legion, Sterling American Legion, Lyons VFW, and was a NRA member. He was a bull rider and steer wrestler and enjoyed attending rodeos. Richard loved hunting, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. On August 17, 1963, Richard was united in marriage with Jeanette Marie Langlois in Spearville, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 3, 2022. He is also preceded in death by his parents; son, Joseph Robert Tommer; and daughter, Cindy Rusch. Richard is survived by his three sons, Rick Tommer and wife Julie of Sterling, KS, Terry Tommer and wife Selena Dawn of Kansas City, KS, and Wayne Tommer of Alden, KS; daughter, Celena Bray and husband Cy of Stilwell, OK; three sisters, Connie Hagler of Rolla, KS, Christine Smith and husband Greg of St. Marys, KS, and Mary Beth Lubbers and husband Eddie of Yoder, KS; twenty grandchildren, Alexis, Brandon, Trenton, Aydan, Zach, Layne, Audrey, Calvin, Hannah, Shelbie, Chelsie, Tandra, Kevin, Ed, Stasha, Mariah, Jenny, Brandi, Sarah, Maranda; and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 31, 2024, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, with Father Michael Brungardt officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, August 31, 2024, at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Kinsley, Kansas with military honors by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, August 30, 2024, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, with family present. A Parish Rosary will be said at 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Friends of Animals in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
