Monica Stephanie (Hernandez) Mies

Monica Stephanie Mies, 53, of South Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away January 8, 2022, at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt, Kansas. She was born August 20, 1968, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Hernandez and Alice Marie Gutierrez. Monica has resided in South Hutchinson since 2021, formerly of Lyons, Kansas. She graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling, Kansas, with the class of 1986, and attended Sterling College. Monica worked in various food services jobs. She was kind to all and had a generous heart to all. Her gentle smile and soft voice will be treasured forever. Monica brought forth a smile and a laugh to everyone she met, people were very important to Monica, she cared for everyone. She loved all animals, especially Rowdy her beloved house cat. On October 22, 2010, Monica was united in marriage with Chris Mies in Great Bend, Kansas. He survives of the home. She is also survived by her mother, Alice Boese of Lyons; son, Derek Thompson of Kansas City, MO; daughters, Sierra Thompson of Denver, CO and Paige Arell of Sterling, KS; sisters, Teresa Belote and husband Donald, and Carolyn Rapp both of Lyons; and two grandchildren, Ryker Brandt and Maverick Arell. Monica was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Hernandez; and stepfather, Jimmy Boese. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, January 14, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with a vigil and rosary at 5:00 P.M. Family will be present following the service. Burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
