Mildred Minta (Goodfellow) Helmer

Mildred Minta Helmer, 96, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away September 11, 2019 at Country Living of Lyons. She was born May 8, 1923 in Lyons, the daughter of David and Gladys Plank Goodfellow. Mildred was a lifelong Lyons resident. She graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1941, and attended McPherson College for one year. Mildred was a farm wife, and taught school for one year at St. John West in Lyons. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Lyons; joined Music Club in 1962-1963; joined Busy Bees in 1945, and was treasurer from 1950 until 1957, and became president in 1979; organized United Methodist Women in 1947, she was the only surviving charter member, holding various offices, and has been treasurer since 1983; started directing choir in the Fall of 1959 until Spring of 2013, serving for 54 years; returning to direct the choir again in the Fall of 2015 until Spring of 2019; she taught Sunday School for 25 years, and drove a school bus for about 25 years. On September 16, 1941, Mildred was united in marriage with Ralph Kenneth Helmer in Lyons. He preceded her in death on June 24, 2006. She is also preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Marjorie Smith and Arlene Hendricks. She is survived by her three children, Ron Helmer and wife Becky of Bloomington, IN, Jim Helmer and wife Deb of Winfield, KS, and Lynette St. Vrain and husband Brad of Goddard, KS; brother, Don Goodfellow and wife Eula Mae of Lyons; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M, Monday, September 16, 2019 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Lyons with Pastor Rob Bolton officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present. Memorials may be given to Ebenezer United Methodist Church in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
