Melvin Dorris Obituary

Melvin Lynn Dorris. 94 of Geneseo Kansas went to be with our Lord on Saturday August 2nd 2025 Melvin the son of Lawrence and Alice Dorris, was born February 4, 1931 in Arthur Nebraska where he lived and attending school until joining the Navy in1948 at the age of 17 serving until 1953 he was a machinist mate 3rd class, serving on USS Pollux (AKS-4), USS Boxer and USS Rochester. After the service he worked several different jobs, but mostly as a mechanic. Mel meet his future wife Helen D.Ann Green in Ogallala NE in 1964, he was working for Ohmco as a welder, They were married in Las Vegas in 1965 where son Gene was born in 1966 The family moved to Oregon where 2nd child Janet was born in 1967. Mel worked as a mechanic in gas stations and for school districts in different towns in Oregon. In 1973 they moved to Baker City Oregon where they ran a Key Lock gas station. Mel enjoyed the outdoors, he hunted and fished, spending time with family enjoying Oregon's mountains, streams and lakes. They moved to Texas in 1983, where Mel retired at the age of 62. In 1988 they moved to Colorado to be closer to aging parents. The family lived several places until settling in Paoli, Colorado in 2014. They decided to travel in their 5th wheel and make Kansas home to be closer to daughter and grand children.They moved to Geneseo Kansas in 2016 where he resided with his wife until his death. Mel had a unique since of humor he often would state things differently than what was normal. Telling people he was 5ft 14 inches tall ( 6ft 2in), he enjoyed peoples puzzled look and responses, He is preceded in death by his Son Gene Ray Dorris, parents Lawrence Milton Dorris and Alice Rae (Shaw) Dorris, Sister Orma Jean (Dorris) Hawkins Brother’s Wilton Dorris, Gerald Dorris, Brother in Law Don Hawkins, Sister in Law’s Joan Dorris, Jacque Dorris, Phyllis Dorris. He is survived by wife Helen D.Ann (Green) Dorris Geneseo KS . Brother Stanley Dorris Elko NV, Daughter Janet Lynn (Dorris) Stream & David Geneseo KS Granddaughters Sara Lynette (Runyon) Ramirez & Ernest Haven KS, Jessica D.Ann Runyon, & Tito Hutchinson KS and 6 great grandchildren Kai, Damion, Kalia, Makena, Alexandria, Alice Mae. Numerous nephews and nieces Memorial dinner will be from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M., Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the 55 Plus Club, Geneseo. Military service at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Arthur Cemetery, Arthur, Nebraska. In lieu of flower make donations to 55+ club of Geneseo KS
