Mattie Bernice (Luntsford) Hemry

Mattie Bernice Hemry, 84, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away September 20, 2021, at her home. She was born March 25, 1937, in Haxton, Colorado, the daughter of John and Zella Spelts Luntsford. Mattie has resided in Lyons since 1952, formerly of Denver, Colorado. She attended Lyons High School, Lyons. Mattie received her CNA, CMA, Activities Aide, Rehabilitation Aide, and Alzheimer’s Aide certificates from Good Samaritan Society. She was a certified nurse aide, med aide, and rehabilitation aide at Good Samaritan Society of Lyons from 1983 until her retirement in 2012. Mattie dedicated ten years in the Angels Wing of Good Samaritan Society. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, and the First Christian Church, both of Lyons. Mattie volunteered at the Rice County Women’s Thrift Shop, Rice County Food Bank, Boy Scout cabin, and volunteered at Good Samaritan Society, to host ice cream socials and bingo nights, and run the soda shop. She attended dinners at Park Place and traveled on bus trips with the Park Place residents. On July 5, 1954, Mattie was united in marriage with Larry Hemry in Lyons. He preceded her in death on November 5, 1986. She is also preceded in death by her parents; and step brother, Robert Shank. Mattie is survived by her seven children, Larry Dan Hemry and the late Bea of Randolph, KS, Rhonda Rae Sorell and husband Phil of St. George, KS, Arthur Dwayne Hemry and wife Sherry of Little River, KS; Zelena Sue Hemry and husband Danny Phillips of Silvia, KS, Tammy Renee Fundenberger and husband Darren of Lyons, Tina Kay Kelley and husband Todd of Lyons, Kimberly Dionne Creswell and husband Jeffry of Mount Hope, KS; thirteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchild. Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the First Christian Church Lyons, with Rev. Robert Friesen and Pastor Thom Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Society of Lyons and Bell and Star Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
