Mary Sandra Rhodes

Mary “Sandra” Rhodes, 90, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away May 22, 2024, at Brookdale of Great Bend, Kansas. She was born March 31, 1934, in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of George Franklin and Freda Emma (Fox) Rhodes. She has resided in Great Bend since 2022, formerly of Lyons, and Little River, Kansas. Sandra graduated from Little River High School with the class of 1952. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Kansas in 1956, and her master’s degree in Maternal Nursing and Child Care from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado in 1962. Sandra also has a degree from Kentucky School of Midwifery at Frontier University. Sandra served in the United States Navy from 1956 until 1961. She was a medical missionary in Papua, New Guinea from 1964 until 1984. Sandra was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Lyons. She is survived by her two sisters, Ruth Lynne Roberson and husband C. David of Pittsfield, MA, and Barbara Fox Lawrence of Palatine, IL; ten nieces and nephews, and thirteen great-nieces and nephews. Sandra is preceded in death by her parents; brother, George Rhodes; and brother-in-law, Louis Lawrence. A funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Lyons, at a later date. Burial will be at Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River. Memorials may be given to Gentiva Hospice in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
