Mary Ellen (Moffitt) McCarthy

Mary Ellen McCarthy, 94, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away April 27, 2025, at Rice Community Hospital, Lyons. She was born September 8, 1930, in Tampa, Kansas, the daughter of Dr. James and Ellen L. (Yucker) Moffitt. Mary has resided in Lyons for the past six years. She lived in Saint David, Arizona for thirteen years and in Peru, South America for three years. Mary graduated from Tampa Rural High School, Tampa, Kansas. She continued her education at St. Francis School of Nursing, Central Arizona College, and her post graduate work at the University of Arizona, where she received her Bachelor of Nursing degree. Mary worked as a Registered Nurse in Peru, South America, Kansas City, Harrington, and Abilene, Kansas. She attended St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons. On May 28, 1955, Mary was united in marriage with Daniel B. McCarthy Jr. in Tampa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2000. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John Moffitt, and Dr. James Moffitt; brother-in-law, John Corbisiero; and four sisters, Corinne Kleopfer, Mildred Hicks, Barbara Kendall, and Aileene Corbisiero. Mary is survived by her two brothers, Frank Moffitt and wife Jan of Hillsboro, KS, and Tom Moffitt and wife Rhoda of Taft, CA; sister-in-law, Glenda Moffitt of Santa Fe, NM; niece, Judy Hodgson and husband Ed of Little River, KS; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Monastery Cemetery, Saint David, Arizona. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
