Margie Spradlin Obituary

Margie Spradlin, 94, passed away in Overland Park, Kansas on October 22, 2020. Margie Marie Aten was born in Lyons, Kansas on October 7, 1926 to Earl and Sigrid Aten. She grew up on a farm in Saxman, Kansas. On January 11, 1947, Margie was united in marriage to William E. “Bud” Spradlin in Wichita, Kansas. They established their first home in Chase, and later settled in Lyons, where she was a secretary for the Rice County Extension Office. Mr. Spradlin was an Army WWII veteran and was employed with Skelly Oil for 37 years. In 1986 they began wintering in Mesa, Arizona, where they enjoyed wonderful times with friends and family during their golden years. In 1994 they sold their Lyons home and moved to Shawnee, Kansas, and continued wintering in Arizona until shortly after 2011 when Bud passed away. Family meant everything to Margie, who was renowned for her kindness, her quick wit and her wonderful cooking. She enjoyed the simplicity of small town life and was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Chase, Kansas. She always needed to be busy, and into her 80s she spent many years as a volunteer for Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bud, brothers Carl and Keith Aten, sister Elizabeth Smith, son Richard Spradlin, and treasured in-laws. She is survived by son Jerry Spradlin of Kansas City, Kansas; daughter Connie Humiston of Olathe, Kansas; grandson Lance Spradlin of Green Bay, Wisconsin (and wife Jo Ellen) and great grandchildren Amanda, Bastian, and Stevie, and great-great grandchild Melidee; grandson Justin Spradlin of Burrton, Kansas (and wife Tana) and great grandchildren Chase Depew and Jhet and Jayci Spradlin; granddaughter Jacia Phillips (and husband Mike) and great grandchildren Hartson and Valentina Phillips of Olathe, Kansas; granddaughter Jana Spradlin (and partner Justin Rone) and great grandchildren Brayden and Kyan of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and grandson Jeffrey Spradlin of Platte City, Missouri. Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until service time with family present. In lieu of flowers, public memorials to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation/Heart of America Chapter in memory of Margie M.
