LaVeta Ardele Starns

LaVeta Ardele Starns, 96, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away March 30, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born December 20, 1928, in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Gladys (Samson) Wagoner. LaVeta has resided in Lyons since 1979, formerly of Alva, Oklahoma. She graduated from Matfield Green High School, Matfield Green, Kansas, with the class of 1945. LaVeta was a housewife. She also was a salesclerk at Howard’s in Lyons, for many years. LaVeta was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, United Methodist Women, and Pi Beta Phi Sorority in Newton, Kansas. She volunteered at the Rice County Women’s Thrift Shop. LaVeta enjoyed watching horse racing, going to the casino, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. She was an avid traveler, having spent many winters in Arizona. On June 30, 1946, LaVeta was united in marriage to Galen Lee Starns in Matfield Green, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 27, 2018. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, David Starns; daughter, Loretta Starns; and brother, Sam Wagoner. LaVeta is survived by her three children, Randy Starns and wife Lorene of McKinney, TX, Brian Starns of Lyons, KS, and Melissa Clarke and husband Chris of Lyons, KS; sister, Myrna Drummond of Salina, KS; sixteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, with Pastor Chris Deeds officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
