LaVerne Ann Reed, 88, near lifelong resident of Lyons, Kansas, passed away on October 13, 2022, in Sterling, Kansas. She was born December 2, 1933, the daughter of Myrtle (Huntington) and Clarence Ehmke, in Kimberly, Wisconsin. On March 21, 1953, LaVerne married Clarence McAllaster. Together they had 5 children. They later divorced. On November 29, 1986, LaVerne married Eugene Reed. He preceded her in death May 24, 2009. LaVerne was a laundry supervisor for 25 years, then worked in housekeeping until she fully retired. She enjoyed taking trips with her friends, listening to country music, Diet Pepsi, and dancing to polka. LaVerne loved purple and thought it was the perfect color for everything. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Lyons, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Barbara Corbin; brother, Wayne Ehmke, two grandsons, Clinton McAllaster and Dickey Cruzan, Jr.; and her best friend, Mattie Hemry. She leaves behind a large family to carry on her spunk: her caretakers (granddaughter), Heather Jeffery and husband Roman, their children Koralie, Lincoln and Kallen of Lyons; three daughters, Patricia Marlar and husband Allen of Ponca City, OK, Micheallynn Romans of Wichita, KS, and Kimberly Hirst of Lyons; son, Wayne McAllaster and wife Julie of Siloam Springs, AR; son-in-law, Bernie Corbin I of Lyons; thirteen grandchildren, Laura Hooker, Bernie Corbin II, John Romans, Rita Corbin, Amanda Stocker Landes, Wanda Stocker, Benjamin Corbin, Brian Corbin, Justin Stocker, Sandra Dixey, Cole McAllaster, Jennifer Goodro, and Erin Smith; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. In typical LaVerne sassiness, she always said she didn't want flowers when she dies, they should've sent them while she was alive so she could enjoy them. Graveside service will be at 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 17, 2022, at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons, with Rev. Robert Friesen officiating. Memorials may be given to the Lyons Fire Department in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
