Kent Shuyler Obituary

Kent David Shuyler, 80, of Alden, Kansas, passed away June 12, 2024, at his home. He was born January 22, 1944, in Sterling, Kansas, the son of Fred William and Pauline (Willett) Shuyler. Kent resided in Boise, Idaho from 1968 until moving to Lakewood, Colorado in 1971, and back to Alden in 1998. He graduated from Alden High School with the class of 1962. Kent received his bachelor's degree in agriculture education in 1966 and a master’s degree in agriculture economics in 1967, both from Kansas State University. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Lakewood, Colorado, from 1968 until retiring in 1998. After retirement, Kent worked at Birzer Funeral Homes for over 20 years. Kent was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church. He was actively involved in Walk to Emmaus in Wichita, Kansas, and Habitat for Humanity in Rice County, Kansas. Kent served on the Valley Township Board and was a former board member of the Rice County Healthcare Foundation. He enjoyed hiking, being outdoors, flying his personal airplane, loved riding horses, and enjoyed watching baseball. On August 25, 1963, Kent was united in marriage with Nancy M. Sewell in Lyons, Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Shuyler of Alden, KS; two children, Karen Smith of Shawnee, KS and Brian Shuyler and wife Susan of Broomfield, CO; brother, Lynn Shuyler and wife Jean of Frisco, TX; four grandchildren, Melissa Jordan and husband Christian, Garrett Smith and wife Madi, Benjamin Shuyler, and Dominic Shuyler; two great-grandchildren, Callan and Claire Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kent is preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother. Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Alden United Methodist Church, with Pastor Rob Bolton officiating. Burial will follow at the Alden Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, June 14, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present. Memorials may be given to the Alden United Methodist Church, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
