Karen Marie Seidel

Karen Marie Seidel, 65, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away April 12, 2025, at her home. She was born October 5, 1959, in Hobbs, New Mexico, the daughter of Eugene Robert and Doris Eileen (Larsen) Seidel. Karen has resided in Lyons since the fall of 1975, formerly of Adel, Iowa. She graduated from Lyons High School, with the class of 1978. In 1982, Karen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, and her Master’s in Education Degree from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, in 1999. Karen was a teacher at Lyons Middle School for thirty-four years. She also was an assistant volleyball coach and spelling bee coach. Karen was an avid Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lyons, and Sons of the American Legion Auxiliary, Beatrice, Nebraska. Karen is survived by her brother, Edwin “Ed” Seidel and wife Micki Jo of Beatrice, NE and their children Jeff Shumaker and Amy Jo Shumaker; two nephews, Chad Burres and Brian Burres; and two nieces, Amy Drew and Rachel (Burres) and husband Tom Elias. She is preceded in death by her parents; Eugene and Doris Seidel; maternal grandparents; paternal grandparents; and sister, Deborah Burres. A celebration of life will be held on May 31, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial will be at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. Memorials may be given to Tipton Lutheran Cemetery, Tipton, Kansas, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
