John Wayne Frye, 64, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away January 6, 2022, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. He was born September 22, 1957, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of William and Patricia Mowery Frye. John has resided in Lyons since 2002, formerly of Sterling and Nickerson, Kansas. He graduated from Nickerson High School with the class of 1975, and later received his degree in farm mechanics from North Central Kansas Technical College. John was a mechanic for the Rice County Highway Department, Raymond Oil Company, UPS, and Rainbow Bread Company. He served in the United States Army from 1975, until his honorable discharge in 1978. During his time in the military, he was part of a stockcar pit crew. John was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, Knights of Columbus Council #7422, Teamsters, and Kansas Street Rods. He enjoyed working on cars, working with his hands, traveling, going to the races, and most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. On April 17, 1982, John was united in marriage with Vera Jane Huffman in Hutchinson. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his five children, Lisa Stout and husband Landon of McPherson, KS, Adam Frye of Nickerson, KS, Brent Frye and wife Yilin of San Ramon, CA, Kyle Frye and wife Monica of Hutchinson, KS, and Stacy Frye and fiancé Josh of Rose Hill, KS; brother, Chris Frye of Nickerson, KS; aunt, Ora Henry of Hutchinson, KS; cousin, Christina Caudle of MO; eight grandchildren, Remington and Rhett Stout, Catherine and Edward Frye, and Emery, Lincoln, Bishop, and Declan Frye; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Earl Frye, and granddaughter, Kennedy Frye. Funeral mass will be at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons with Father Michael Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow at Wildmead Cemetery, Nickerson with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 4:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons and from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons with family present. A Parish Rosary will be said at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Memorials may be given to Knights of Columbus Council #7422 (for a scholarship to a trade school) in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
