Harland “Gene” Johnson, 72, of Sterling, passed away November 11, 2020 at Ascension St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born March 2, 1948 in Goodland, Kansas, the son of Marion A. and Doris N. Varney Johnson. Gene has resided in Sterling since 2006, formerly of Lyons. He graduated from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1966. Gene worked for American Salt in Lyons as a pumper; worked as a mechanic for Buell Motors in Lyons and Westerhaus Ford in Ellsworth; and drove a concrete truck and pumped sand for Mid-America Redi Mix in Lyons. He was a faithful member of “Bible Study” on Thursday mornings in the dining room of Jefferson Plaza; member of the Royal Masonic Lodge #192 of Lyons; and served on the nutrition board for Friendship Meals. Gene enjoyed coffee time and meals in the Jefferson Plaza Dining Room. He also enjoyed helping residents water and care for their plants and animals. On January 1, 1990, Gene was united in marriage with Marilyn L. (Mauk) Yeakel in Lyons. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2009. He is also preceded in death by his parents. Gene is survived by his brother, Gayle Johnson and wife Cathy of Hutchinson; sister, Eileen Dickerson and husband Randy of Hutchinson; nieces and nephews, Jordan and Emma Johnson, Kim Dickerson Oard, Katie and Kristin Dickerson; and other nieces, nephews, and close friends. Graveside funeral service will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Lyons Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Kim Dickerson Oard officiating. Memorials may be made to the Sterling Silver Threads or Sterling Village in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
