Gary Lee Spence

Gary Lee Spence, 79, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away April 11, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society of Lyons. He was born May 7, 1941 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Chester and Doris Miller Spence. Gary has resided in Lyons since 1994, formerly of Hutchinson. He graduated from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1959 and attended Hutchinson Community College for two years. He served in the United States Navy from February 28, 1962 until February 4, 1968. Gary was a used car salesman and cattle truck driver for Branson Truck Line, INC of Lyons. He loved golfing, was an avid Denver Bronco’s and Kansas University Basketball fan, and most of all enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s baseball games. On March 16, 1994, Gary was united in marriage with Helen Barrett in Lyons. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his three sons, Grady Spence of Hutchinson, Cheston Spence of Omaha, NE, and Sterling Spence of Hutchinson; daughter, Lisa Roberts and husband Jason of Stanten, CA; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Gary is preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Roddy; and brother, Dennis Spence. Graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Lyons Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Phil Green officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to Friends of Animals Rice County or the American Diabetes Association in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
