Gary Harold Hahn

Gary Harold Hahn, 86, of both Abilene & Sterling, Kansas, passed away September 4, 2024, with his family close by. He was born January 19, 1938, in Gregory, South Dakota, the son of Jack and LeVerne Driscoll. Gary graduated from Gregory High School in the class of 1956 where he was most proudly pitched a number of no-hitters for the American Legion Junior Baseball Team. After a short stint on the freshman basketball team at the University of Minnesota, he enlisted in the Army where he competed on the basketball team in Germany. Gary married June (Fowles) Hahn November 29, 1961 and from that union, children Vikki, LaMonna, Scott and Audra were born. After living in Seattle, Washington, Great Falls, Montana, and Salina, Kansas, he became a 50 year resident of Abilene. It was there where he raised his family and worked for more than three decades as a district manager for Family Record Plan. He was a devout member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was known for religiously serving coffee weekly to the congregation. When he wasn’t serving coffee at the church, he could be found every sunrise at the Abilene McDonalds with his closest buddies solving all the world’s problems. His passion for a great debate about a bad call in the 4th quarter or politics was well-known in Abilene. Gary lived out his later life in Sterling, Kansas alongside June where he was most easily recognized on his early morning walks with his dogs and quickly became a staple about town on his yellow three wheel bike. But Gary was most famous for his quick wit and daily banter at the local Dillons Store and truly loved a bargain deal on a steak. Gary was a lifelong lover of sports, but no season brought him more joy than watching his children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren compete. His love for a good game and a hearty meal were amongst his greatest loves, and his memory will forever live on with his family through the Kansas State Wildcats, the Kansas City Royals and Braums milkshakes. He is survived by his daughter, Vikki McAsey of Abilene; daughter, LaMonna Galyon and husband Chris of Sterling; son, Scott Hahn of Kansas City; daughter, Audra Clock and husband Dennis of Winfield; and their mother, June Hahn. He is survived by brother, John David Driscoll of Winner, South Dakota; sister, Deborah Hahn of Kearney, Nebraska; grandchildren, Nicolle Clawson and husband Rodney, Jessica Chrisco and husband Josh, Taylor Galyon & wife Lauren, Lauren Clock, Riley Galyon, Cooper Galyon, and Mikayley Clock. He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren and preceded in death by his parents. Gary’s viewing will be Wednesday, September 11, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, Kansas, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. His celebration of life will be Thursday, September 12 at 11:00 am at the Sterling First United Methodist Church followed by a graveside burial at Sterling Cemetery.
