Dixie Proffitt Obituary

Dixie Lee Proffitt, 84, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away May 1, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 16, 1941, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Russell and Zita (Page) Darling. Dixie was a lifelong Rice County resident. She graduated from Alden High School, Alden, Kansas, with the class of 1959. Dixie worked on the farm, Brown’s Pharmacy, Cundith Accounting, Sterling Services, and for Central Prairie Co-op. She was a member of the Alden Baptist Church. Dixie was a sponsor for Beta Sigma Phi-MU Alpha. She enjoyed camping, traveling, having traveled to all 50 states, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On May 31, 1959, Dixie was united in marriage to Larry Proffitt in Alden, Kansas. They would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on May 31, 2025. Together they had three daughters, Barbara, Debra, and Cynthia. Dixie is survived by her husband, Larry Proffitt of Sterling, KS; two daughters, Debra Wiebe and husband Curt of Sterling, KS, and Cynthia Peters and husband Doug of Little River, KS; two brothers, Ronnie Darling of Alden, KS, and Curt Darling and wife Cindy of Alden, KS; brother-in-law, Lonnie Lewis of Scott City, KS; sister-in-law, Janice Darling of Sterling, KS; five grandchildren, Brenna Winn and husband Brandon of Sterling, KS, Derek Wiebe and wife Megan of Hutchinson, KS, Jaime Kearney and husband Ryan of Overland Park, KS, Laramie Peters and wife Darby of Salina, KS, and Allie Thomas and husband Hunter of Salina, KS; and eight great-grandchildren, Morgan Winn, Rylie Winn, Ridge Wiebe, Tate Wiebe, Perri Kearney, Pierce Kearney, Sutton Peters, and Scottlyn Peters. Dixie is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Barbara Stutz; brother, Billy “Bill” Darling; sister, Joyce Lewis; and son-in-law, Vern Stutz. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Reno County in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
