David Smith Obituary

David Lee Smith, 103, of Lyons, passed away July 4, 2020 at his home. He was born April 28, 1917 in Lyons, the son of Samuel E. “S.E.” and Lola S. Elam Smith. David was a lifelong Rice County resident. He served in the United States Army from 1932 until his retirement in 1964. David was a World War II Veteran serving for 32 years as a Staff Sergeant. After returning from the Army he was a farmer. David was a member of the VFW and American Legion of Lyons. He was an avid builder, enjoyed gardening, and most of all loved spending time with his family. On April 28, 1978, David was united in marriage with Betty L. Shufelberger in Alma, Nebraska. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his children, Sue L. Wright and husband Lonnie of Mulvane, Jody Markwell and husband Terry of Kingman, KS, and Debra Engelbraugh of Wichita; twenty grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, and three sons. Graveside service will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at Lyons Municipal Cemetery with Jeremy Hedge officiating. Visitation will be from 8:30 until 9:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present. Memorials may be given to American Legion Post #128, Sterling in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
