Chester Kern Jr Obituary

Chester Harvey “Chet” Kern Jr., 73, of Geneseo, Kansas, passed away June 14, 2020 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born December 24, 1946 in Lyons, the son of Chester Harvey Sr. and Lois Johnston Kern. Chet has resided in Geneseo for the past 30 years, formerly of Tampa, Florida. He served in the United States Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, where he was a JCSE refuel maintenance coordinator from August 26, 1965 until his honorable discharge on August 31, 1991. Chet was a past commander of the Geneseo American Legion Post #241 for many years; and was also a member of the NRA. He enjoyed gardening, doing home repairs, and mechanic work. On December 13, 1969, Chet was united in marriage with Susan Lyn VerSteegh in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She preceded him in death on January 31, 2010. He is also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Amy Kern; and a great-grandson, Colt Kern. Chet is survived by his son, Corey Kern and wife Brenda of Geneseo; three grandsons, Jesse Kern of Great Bend, KS, Brandon Kern and wife Santana and great-grandson Wyatt of Wilson, KS, and Nathan Kern of Geneseo; and one great-grandson, Wyatt Kern. Graveside service will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Geneseo Cemetery, Geneseo, Kansas, with military honors by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to American Legion Post #241, Geneseo in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
