Billy Eugene “Bill” Darling, 87, of Alden, Kansas, passed away September 16, 2024, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. He was born June 5, 1937, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Russell and Zita (Page) Darling. Bill was a lifelong Alden resident. He graduated from Alden High School with the class of 1955. He worked for the Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline, starting in 1958 as a mechanic and retiring in 1995 as a clerk. Bill was a member of the Alden Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee; was a volunteer for the Alden Fire Department; and was a former Alden City Council member. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps from March 27, 1956 to March 26, 1958, attaining the rank of Corporal. On November 4, 1960, Bill was united in marriage with Janice Ashley in Sterling, Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Janice Darling of Sterling, KS; son, Scott Darling of Salina, KS; daughter, Lori Darling of Wichita, KS; two brothers, Ronnie Darling of Alden, KS, and Curt Darling and wife Cindy of Alden, KS; sister, Dixie Proffitt and husband Larry of Sterling, KS; two granddaughters, Samantha Darling LaCount and husband Paul of Topeka, KS, and Kelsey Darling of Topeka, KS; and great-granddaughter, Sylvia LaCount. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Joyce Lewis. Private family graveside service will be held at the Alden Valley Cemetery, Alden, with Pastor Rob Bolton officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, September 20, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present. Memorials may be given to Hospice & HomeCare of Reno County or Parkinson’s Foundation, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
