Bernice Day Obituary

Bernice Fay Day, 109, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away September 13, 2024, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born March 25, 1915, in Morris County, Kansas, the daughter of Clinton T. and Bertha (Bersuch) Gnagey. Bernice graduated from high school in 1931. On August 4, 1933, Bernice was united in marriage with Charles Day in El Dorado, Kansas. They resided in El Dorado, Winfield, and Eureka, Kansas, until moving to Chase, Kansas, in 1950 during the oil field boom. In 2003, they moved to Lyons. Bernice worked as a salesclerk in a grocery store and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Chase. Bernice loved to crocket, bake bread, play dominos and rummikub, and reading. She was still exercising several days a week at the Sterling Village until age 109. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and friend, Luann Bowersock. Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, on January 9, 2005. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Clinton Gnagey; and two sisters, Verona A. (Briggs) Anglemyer and Frances Penland. Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Sterling Village, Sterling, with Pastor Nickia Larsen officiating. Burial will follow at the Chase Springdale Cemetery, Chase, Kansas. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M., until service time at the Sterling Village.  Memorials may be given to the Bell and Star Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
