Mary Madena (Kern) Smith

Mary Madena Kern Smith, 99, Lyons, passed away March 17, 2018 at the Sterling Presbyterian Manor. She was born on May 25, 1918 in Frederick, KS, the daughter of Frank M. and Ina Lavern (Verna) Maxwell Kern. Mary graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1936, and from the Venus Academy of Beauty Culture in Wichita, KS in 1937. She has resided in Hutchinson, KS since 1991, formerly of Lyons, KS. Mary worked as a dental assistant for Dr. L. Thane Frazier DDS in Lyons for 29 years. She also worked for San Lea Beauty Salon in Gt. Bend, KS, and for Ed Kimple’s Beauty Salon in Lyons, KS for several years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Lyons, American Legion Auxiliary, Lyons, and was a member of the Athenaeum Study Club of Lyons for 17 years. Mary enjoyed cooking “goodies’ for family and friends. On October 15, 1937, Mary was united in marriage with Merle R. Smith in Bushton, KS. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Chester and Paul Kern; and daughter, Connie Martin. Mary is survived by her daughter, Darlene Gurney of Hutchinson, KS; four grandsons, Tracy and Donna Martin of McPherson, KS, Terry and Tammy Martin of Hutchinson, KS, Tim and Marie Martin of Alden, KS, Tom Martin of Wichita, KS; nine great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present. Memorials can be made to the Hospital District #1 of Rice County, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
