Herbert M. "Herb" Critchfield

Herbert M. "Herb" Critchfield, 74, of Alden, Kansas, passed away June 23, 2019 at his home. He was born November 3, 1944 in Oberlin, KS, the son of Raymon and Queenie Smith Critchfield. He has resided in Alden since 1972, formerly of Lyons, Colby, Rexford, and Oberlin, KS. Herb was a oilfield driller, truck driver, and a police officer in his early years. Herb served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church; Lyons VFW; and the Sterling American Legion Post #128. On October 15, 1970, Herbert was united in marriage with Elsie M. Moore in Alden. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2014. He is also preceded in death by his parents; son, Leonard Thurman; grandson, Keith Vinson; brother-in-law, Fred Counter; and son-in-law, Robert Bagby. He is survived by his two sons, Joe Critchfield and wife Tina of Alden and Doug Thurman and wife Debbie of Lyons, KS; four daughters, Dori Prebble and husband Andy of Sterling, KS, Patsy Ramirez and husband Moe of Lyons, KS, Vivian Bliss and husband John of Kansas City, MO, and Verna Bagby of Lyons, KS; daughter-in-law, Elaine Thurman of Lyons; brother, Martin Critchfield of Denver, CO; sister, Sandy Counter of Oberlin, KS; seven grandchildren, Annette and husband Vaughn, Gary, Jessica, Cassidy, Cody and wife Chelsie, Randy, and Summer; six great-grandchildren, Devin, Bayleigh, Jace, Archer, Raymond, and Kai; two nieces and two nephews. Graveside service will be at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 28, 2019 at Alden Valley Cemetery, Alden, with Pastor Rob Bolton officiating. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Alden United Methodist Church in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
