Galen Lee Starns, 91, of Lyons, passed away October 27, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society, Lyons. He was born June 3, 1927 in Petrolia, Kansas, the son of Hugh “Doc” and Sylvia Patton Starns. He graduated from Matfield Green High School with the class of 1944. Galen has resided in Lyons for the past 39 years. Galen served in the United States Navy as a Merchant Marine during World War II. He was a superintendent for Cities Service Gas Company, Lyons, Kansas for 42 years, retiring in 1984. Galen was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lyons, Methodist Men’s Group, and Habitat for Humanity of Rice County. On June 30, 1946, Galen was united in marriage with LaVeta A. Wagoner in Matfield Green, Kansas. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his children, Loretta Starns and life partner Pam Turner of Colorado Springs, CO, Randy Starns and wife Lorene of McKinney, TX, Brian Starns of Lyons, KS, David Starns of Lyons, KS, and Missie Clarke and husband Chris of Lyons, KS; sister, Irene Pierce and husband Max of Newton, KS, sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Starns; and sister, June Brock. Funeral service will be 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Lyons with Pastor Kim Shank officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church, Lyons or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
