Carolyn Sayler of Lyons, retired journalist and author, died Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. She was a victim of CBD (Corticobasal Degeneration), a form of Parkinson’s Disease. She was 83. Born March 30, 1934, to Horace and Mary Vermillion Jones of Lyons, she married John Sayler of Jetmore on February 26, 1956. She was a partner in the Lyons Publishing Co., and was wire editor and feature writer for the Lyons Daily News. She was a graduate of Lyons High School and Kansas State University. Volunteer activities and memberships included Worthwhile Club, Habitat for Humanity, Youth Friends, Lyons Vision 2000 Committee, and Lyons Good Samaritan Center. She was chairman of the exhibits committee for the new wing of the Coronado Quivira Museum. She served two terms on the Kansas State Historical Society board of directors, and was chairman of the publications committee. Survivors are her husband John, a son, David Sayler of Portland, Oregon, and a daughter, Dr. Catherine Sayler of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Paul Jones. A remembrance at Birzer Funeral Home of Lyons is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018, with members of the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. The body has been donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center. A memorial fund has been established for children’s projects with the Rice County Healthcare Foundation.
