Roy Gale Elstun, 68, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away March 29, 2024, at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born July 9, 1955, in Rice County, Kansas, the son of Henry Howard “Hank” and Marcia Alice (Jones) Elstun. Roy was a lifelong Sterling resident, having lived at Jefferson Plaza for over 20 years. He graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1974 and graduated from Central Kansas Area Vocational Technical School in 1988 with a certificate in building trades. Roy served in the United States Army in Germany, Fort Riley and Georgia. He worked as a night watchman and carpenter. Roy volunteered at the American Red Cross organizing blood drives in Sterling and donating over 10 gallons of his own blood. He also volunteered his time for Silver Threads in Sterling organizing the horseshoe competition during the Sterling Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebrations. Roy enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, recycling, crafts and most of all visiting with friends at Jefferson Plaza. He is most known for woodworking and whittling spoons and forks from pieces of wood. Roy is survived by his two nephews, Phillip and Mark; and two nieces, Patty and Terri. Roy is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sharon Kay (Elstun) Spencer; and brother-in-law, Junior Ray Spencer. A Celebration of Life will be held by friends on Friday, April 12th at 10am at Jefferson Plaza. Memorials may be given to Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, to help offset funeral expenses.
