RESIDENCE: He was a longtime Lyons resident.
OCCUPATION: Retired Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Air Force where he served for 21 years including a tour of duty during the Vietnam War. He then returned to Lyons where he worked as parts manager for Young Motors for 30 years.
EDUCATION: Jim graduated from Thomas More Prep in Hays, and later received his Bachelor’s Degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska.
MEMBERSHIPS: Jim was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons; member of the Knights of Columbus; and served on the church council; member of the American Legion and VFW, both of Hutchinson.
DATE OF MARRIAGE: On June 18, 1955, Jim was united in marriage with Lila Jean Warta in Ellsworth, KS. She preceded him in death on June 17, 1979. On May 5, 1982, Jim was united in marriage with Alberta Crowl Forsythe in Lyons, KS.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Alberta “Bertie” Young of the home; son, Stephen Young, Salina, KS; daughter, Diana and Gerald “Jerry” Wamsley, Alva, OK; brother, Bill and Eleanor Young, Lyons, KS; sister, Barbara Miller, Dodge City, KS; grandchildren, Heath Nickel and Cameron, Tyler, TX, Matthew and Ashley Nickel, Emma and Eli Nickel, Alva, OK, Lyndee and Kyle Cudmore, Aubree and Hayes Cudmore, Cherokee, OK, Tanner Wamsley, Stillwater, OK, Rhys Young, Washington, D.C., Malia Young, Manhattan, KS, Elle Young and Tatum Young both of Salina, KS.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: Parents; brother, Robert Young; sisters, Mary Amato and Elizabeth “Betty” Higgins
FUNERAL MASS: 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 20, 2016 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons.
OFFICIATING: Father Robert Spencer
BURIAL: Lyons Municipal Cemetery with military honors by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
VISITATION: 2:00 to 5:00 P.M., Friday, August 19, 2016 at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons and from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M., at St. Paul Catholic Church, with Parish Rosary at 7:00 P.M.
